Tennis is a sport usually played between two players (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). Each player uses a racket that is strung to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over a net into the opponent's court.

Racing

A sport race is a competition of speed, against an objective criterion, usually a clock or to a specific point. The competitors in a race try to complete a given task in the shortest amount of time. Typically this involves traversing some distance, but it can be any other task involving speed to reach a specific goal.

Cricket

Cricket is a bat-and-ball team sport. Many variations exist, with its most popular form played on an oval-shaped outdoor arena known as a cricket field at the centre of which is a rectangular 22-yard (20.12 m) long pitch that is the focus of the game. A game (or match) is contested between two teams of eleven players each.

Golf

Golf is a precision club-and-ball sport, in which competing players (golfers), using many types of clubs, attempt to hit balls into each hole on a golf course while employing the fewest number of strokes. Golf is one of the few ball games that does not require a standardized playing area. Instead, the game is played on golf "courses", each of which features a unique design, although courses typically consist of either nine or 18 holes. Golf is defined, in the rules of golf, as "playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance with the Rules."

Football(soccer)

The game is played on a rectangular field of grass or green artificial turf, with a goal in the middle of each of the short ends. The object of the game is to score by driving the ball into the opposing goal. In general play, the goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with their hands or arms, while the field players typically use their feet to kick the ball into position, occasionally using their torso or head to intercept a ball in midair. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins.

Hockey

Hockey game is played on the natural grass, gravel, sand based and water based artificial turfs. It is played with the very small hard ball. This type of game was included in the modern Olympic games in 1908. It is the game of 11 players between two teams which is completely against with each other and using their 'hooked' sticks to hit, pass, push and dribble a small, hard, usually white, ball, with one aim in mind-to score the more points by getting their ball into a opponent's goal.

The bitter-sweet final countdown of the Delhi Games, which finally ended up delighting many despite the early scandalous hurdles, has officially begun.

The sporting event, which began with a bang with an electrifying opening ceremony on Oct 3, will culminate with what is expected to be an even bigger and better closing ceremony.

The ceremony, scheduled to begin at 7 pm, promises to a spectacle that no one can afford to miss with a 30 minute light and sound show, cultural and marshal arts programmes, and the awaited performance of 2010 children singing ‘Vande Mataram’ to culminate the 2010 multi-discipline sporting event.

Delhi’s celebration will reach a crescendo at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Thursday as the XIXCommonwealth Games flag comes down to begin its journey to Glasgow for the next meet in 2014.

The 2-hour-15-minute show featuring 7,000 performers from all over the country, who trained hard for 25 days, will spread the message of universal love as the athletes from participating nations and territories march out as a one big family after 11 days of exhilarating action.

“The closing ceremony is divided into five broad segments starting with Agni that will showcase all the martial arts that originated in India.

Next on stage, enthralling the capacity crowd of 60,000 lucky spectators and millions around the globe, will be the Military Martial music, a segment which will remind the Delhiites of the ‘Beating the Retreat’ after the Republic Day celebrations. It will be followed by the ‘Tribute to the Motherland’

Tickets for the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games were sold out Tuesday night – nearly 48 hours before the actual event Oct 14, an official at the ticketing helpline said.

“The tickets in the Rs.750 bracket were sold out quite a long time back. After that, the ones in the Rs.4,000 category were also sold out. Until Tuesday morning, there were only eight tickets available in the Rs.20,000 bracket and around 240 in the Rs.50,000 bracket,” the manager said.

“But last (Tuesday) night everything was sold out,” he added.

The closing ceremony, to be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Thursday, promises to be a spectacular celebration of song and dance with a colourful laser show.

The helpline manager further said that after the great success of the opening ceremony of the Games, they have been bombarded with enquiries about tickets for the closing ceremony.

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be the chief guest at the event.

The sale and availability of the Games tickets have been mired in controversy from the beginning. Spectators have often been told that the tickets have been sold out while the venues remained half-empty.

Pakistan sends 15 member hockey squad to Asian Games

Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) selection committee on Wednesday announced a 16-member hockey squad for the Asian Games scheduled on November 12-27 in the Chinese city of Guangzhou.

PHF selection committee, headed by former Olympian Hanif Khan, had also recalled penalty corner specialist and world-record holder hockey star Sohail Abbas in the national squad for this month’s Asian Games. Zeeshan Ashraf, full-back, will lead the outfit as captain while Muhammad Imran will be his assistant, according to PHF officials.

Goal keeper Salman Akbar has also been included in the team.

Pakistani hockey team is aiming at winning the Asian Games gold medal after ending in a disappointing sixth position in last month’s Commonwealth Games and in the last position in the World Cup held earlier this yearin New Delhi of India.

Pakistan, once a motivating force in field hockey, has failed to win any medals since the World Cup in 1994 and the only gold medal it won at the Asian Games came in the 1990 when the Asian Games was held in China.

In the last Asian Games in Doha, Pakistan lost to China in the semifinals competing for the bronze medal.

Abbas, a 35-year-old player who holds the world record for most goals with 306, had quit international hockey matches in 2004, but members of PHF selection committee have pinned hopes on him in a bid to boost Pakistan’s hockey fortunes.

Because of the importance of the Asian Games, PHF selection committee had once again decided to use senior players like Sohail Abbas, Waseem Ahmad, Zeeshan Ashraf and Salman Akbar.

“Obviously we are hoping they will deliver the results for us in the Asian Games and if we do manage to win the gold medal it will guarantee us a direct spot in the 2012 Olympics in London,” said Chief of PHF selection committee Hanif.

The men’s hockey event of the Asian Games will take place from Nov 15 to 25. The ten participating teams have been divided into two pools. Pool “A” consists of South Korea, China, Malaysia, Singapore and Oman while Group “B” comprises Pakistan, India, Japan, Bangladesh and Hong Kong (China).

The Green-Shirts (referring to the Pakistani hockey team) will play its first match against Hong Kong on November 17, the second against Japan on 18, the third against India on 20, and the last against Bangladesh on 21.

Classification matches and semifinals will be played on 23 while position matches and final match will be played on Nov 25.

Pakistan wins hockey gold at Asian Games

  • GUANGZHOU: Pakistan bagged its third gold medal of the 2010 Asian Games when it defeated Malaysia 2-0 in the final in Guangzhou, China on Thursday.
  • Fired-up Pakistan annexed the Asian Games men’s hockey gold medal after 20 years with the final win.
  • Specialist drag-flicker Sohail Abbas gave Pakistan the lead in the 28th minute when he converted from a penalty corner. Abbas slammed home the ball in the top right corner in Pakistan’s second attack of the first half.
  • Striker Rehan Butt then consolidated the lead three minutes into the second half when he hit a close-range goal from open play (in the 38th minute).
  • It was Pakistan’s eighth Asiad hockey gold, ending a drought that stretched back to Beijing in 1990, and handed them their first major title since winning the World Cup in Sydney in 1994.
  • Pakistan ended the year on a high after a disappointing eight-month period in which they finished a humiliating 12th out of 12 at the World Cup in March and took sixth place at the Commonwealth Games in October.
  • The Pakistanis kneeled in prayer after the final whistle, before lifting their Dutch coach Michel van den Heuvel over their shoulders to loud applause from the stands.
  • Malaysia, often dubbed the sport’s perennial under-achievers, had to settle for silver in their maiden appearance in the title clash after winning the bronze medal six times.
  • The entire Malaysian team, barring Sikh player Baljit Singh, shaved their heads in a practice called ‘nazar’ to ward off evil spirits in the final, but failed to produce the spark that won them the semi-final against India.
  • Amin Rahim, whose two late goals sank India, faltered in all three penalty corners his team earned in the second half.

Malaysia had gone into the final as the only unbeaten team in the competition with four wins and a draw.

By winning the final, Pakistan has also confirmed it’s berth at the 2012 London Olympics.
